Ikea Hack | McGee & Co Doormat DIY

July 3, 2019
front stoop decor on a budget.

I recently saw a beautiful front doormat on McGee and Co. They have stunning pieces for your home, but the doormat was out of budget for my project! The doormat was $80 and my front stoop makeover had a budget of only $50. I decided that I could create my own diy doormat on a budget! Instead of purchasing a stencil I created my own, which was a huge money saver and actually a lot of fun!

DIY Doormat Materials:

  • Ikea Doormat – $6.99
  • Plastic Sheet – $1
  • Rust-Oleum Paint – $0 (I used leftover paint)
  • Sharpie
  • Exacto Knife
  • Painters Tape

STEP 1: Choose Your Pattern

I decided on this wreath pattern as I was using the McGee & Co doormat as inspiration.

STEP 2: Cut the Plastic Posterboard

I chose to cut the posterboard to the same size as the doormat as I didn’t have to worry about taping at all it would be protected from the plastic.

STEP 3: Draw The Pattern

I went freehand and drew the wreath the best I could. To cut out the stencil I was using am exacto knife, so the drawing didn’t have to be totally accurate.

STEP 4: Cut Out The Pattern

Using the exacto knife, make sure you have a sharp blade, cut out the pattern. This was surprisingly easier than I thought it would be.

STEP 5: Tape

Tape down the sides of the stencil onto the doormat.

STEP 6: Paint

Attach the Rust-Oleum spray handle (it’s a lifesaver) and slowly spray back and forth on the stencil.

STEP 7: Another Layer of Paint

Here is where I went wrong – I think you need to wait for the paint on both the doormat AND the stencil to dry before starting the second coat. I found the paint on the stencil was still wet so bleed slightly onto the mat. To keep clean lines, make sure there is not excess spray paint on the stencil. Doing 3 coats of paint from further away might be a better idea, less spray paint on the stencil.

Once the stencil is dry you can remove it! Voila, a brand new door mat. If you found your stencil did bleed a little, simply use some small scissors to cut the doormat, I found that to be the easiest way to clean it up.

If you don’t want a wreath or image but words, you could always print out words and trace them onto the plastic posterboard, since it is see-through. Honestly this dollar store plastic posterboard is the best thing I have ever found! It made creating a DIY doormat super easy!
